Distance Education Opportunities

Individual Subject Pathway

Sometimes, a senior student cannot study their chosen subjects at their school due to factors such as timetable clashes or the school not offering the subject. In the Virtual Learning Community (VLC), students can study up to two subjects virtually in the VLC, while their current school remains their Main Learning Provider (MLP).

Who can enrol as a School-based student?

Year 11 and 12 students at Queensland Government or non-government schools, or other schools of distance education in Queensland, can enrol with Hillcrest Christian College's Virtual Learning Community (VLC), subject to places being available. A student enrolled at another school may apply to study a subject provided they are unable to study that subject at their Main Learning Provider (MLP) school.

This may be due to one of the following reasons:

the school does not offer the subject

the school offers the subject, but timetable constraints prevent the student from studying it at their current school

the student began studying the subject at a previous school and wishes to continue the course.

Subject fees apply. These fees are payable by the base school.

All School-based enrolment queries must be initiated by the student’s MLP (not the student’s parent/carer). If you are an interested parent, please contact your student’s current school.

Please note:

1.    Before proceeding with an enrolment, schools should read the information presented in this School-based Enrolments Section.

2.    Students seeking school-based enrolment may enrol in up to two subjects in the VLC.

3.    Students must meet the course entry recommendations when enrolling in other subjects. These can be found in Course Overviews.

4.    Acceptance into subjects is only where capacity exists.

5.    All school-based enrolment applications are to be completed here: Hillcrest Christian College (Virtual Learning Community) - Single Subject Enrolment – Fill out form

6.    To ensure students are successful in their chosen subjects, students will not be enrolled after Week 3 of the term or start of unit for Years 11 and 12. Units 1 and 3 begin in Term 4 of the school year, and Units 2 and 4 begin in Term 2.

7.    Students will need to keep up to date with work returns and submission of assessment to remain enrolled. It is the responsibility of the School-based Supervisor to oversee this.

8.    Students continuing from Year 11 into 12 do not need to be re-enrolled.

9.    If a student is not continuing, the School-based Supervisor is to send a school based cancellation form as soon as possible to vlc@hillcrest.qld.edu.au.

The VLC Experience

In the Virtual Learning Community (VLC), students will have a dedicated teacher that is invested in them and their learning. For each subject, they have 2x 80-minute live lessons per week. These may sit within a typical school timetable (8.20am-3.00pm), or may sit outside of these times (3.00-5.00pm), depending on student numbers and demand for each subject. Live lessons are interactive, and students will see their virtual teacher, as well as their virtual classmates, within the call. Live lessons are interactive and engaging, with students asking and answering questions, and teachers introducing new content, consolidating knowledge and understanding, preparing and supporting students through assessment tasks, and giving regular feedback. There is time within the live lessons for students to ask individual questions and get one-on-one assistance. Students can also communicate with their teachers via Teams messages and emails outside of lesson times.

Information for Main Learning Providers (MLPs)

  1. Students require a school-based supervisor, appointed by the Main Learning Provider (MLP). This staff member will be the main point of contact between the VLC and the MLP regarding any issues and/or information regarding the student. The MLP is responsible for sharing any relevant information with the parent/carer/s. The school-based supervisor ensures students attend and are prepared for lessons, and have the correct materials, assuring that student work and assessment are submitted by the due date, available via students' Connex portal. They are also responsible for arranging any catch-up sessions as required for absent students. The MLP must advise the VLC of the school-based supervisor's name and contact details upon application. The school-based supervisor must keep in close contact with the VLC throughout the student's period of enrolment.

  2. MLPs must submit the enrolment form, along with supporting documentation, prior to the end of the previous term. Enrolment applications will not be accepted after Week 3 of Term 4 (for Units 1 and 3) and Week 3 of Term 2 (for Units 2 and 4).

  3. Ensure that the subject fees are paid by the invoiced due date.

  4. Communicate with the parent/carer/s regarding the enrolment. This includes making the parent/carer/s aware of the enrolment, notifying them of the student's progress throughout the course, and communicating with them upon the student's completion of the course (or withdrawal from the course).

  5. Provide a suitable learning environment for the student. Where a class of students are enrolled, provide a supervising staff member to assist with behaviour and supervision during live lessons.

  6. Advise the VLC of a student's departure and/or withdrawal from the course, via the Enrolment Cancellation form.

  7. The MLP is responsible for submitting an AARA to the QCAA Portal wherever applicable. The base school needs to notify and forward a copy of the AARA to the VLC subject teacher and CC in aara@hillcrest.qld.edu.au before the assessment date. Before the VLC subject teachers can issue a comparable task in Year 11 and Year 12 assessments where required, the MLP must negotiate with the VLC subject teachers for a suitable assessment date and record it in the AARA document for QCAA.
